Week 5: Character texturing

This week I am mainly responsible for painting the textures of the characters and start to test rendering.

I used Substance Painter to draw the mapping. And because we needed a very flat image, I only used base color.

Then I used the aitoon material in Maya to test the rendering effect.

After selecting the material,  I need to change the filter_type (sampling settings) to contour. I’ve set the edge colour to grey so it’s not very obvious.

Then add the texture to the base color. Another important thing to do is to set up tonemap. Connect a ramp node here to create a cell look (regarded as a tone map).

I like this effect very much, but after the group discussion, everyone agreed that adding some light and shadow effects would be better, so after Yuehui’s adjustment, we got this effect

Yuehui also taught me how to use the world light in Substance Painter to add highlights and shadows, which is a very handy method. This will obviously work much better than my drawing.

And finally, evidence of serious study during group time Hahahaha!
