Week 1: Intro to the unit and projects

The main task this week was to identify the project theme and find teammates.

Team members

Recently our team is formed by 4 teammates: Zhengzhong Liang, Ziyin Wang, Guanze Wu and me. Unfortunately, we still haven’t found a student from other majors to cooperate with, but we will try again next week.

Expectations of professionalism

Being very interested in stylised rendered animation, my initial idea was to explore this direction in this collaborative project and add some simple effects to the animation, which is a new area for me.

Project

Cel-shading is a way of rendering 3D objects to make them appear more 2D, or cartoon-like.

Due to time constraints, we first set the story between two characters and because we wanted to make the story more interesting, we set one character as a robot. And in order not to be limited in our thinking, we each wrote a short story outline and setting – about a human and a robot.

We made suggestions for each group member’s story and we incorporated good ideas into the story

Task Assignment

As each person has different skills, we decided to split the project into sections and each person is considered a team leader for the different sections and is responsible for this. This way everyone was very involved in the project and also exercised their leadership skills.

The project works can be separated into several areas: storyboard, modelling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering, composite and editing, which is a normal pipeline for a 3D animated short film.
